Share files between two phones via Wi-Fi Direct

When we want to share a file of our smartphone with another person, the most common thing is to send it through WhatsApp or by email. If the person is close to us, we also usually send the file via Bluetooth, a technology that has given much of itself with the old phones. However, there is a much faster protocol than the Bluetooth to send files, the Wi-Fi Direct.

A Wi-Fi Direct connection, as the name implies, is a direct connection between two devices via Wi-Fi. Thanks to this connection, instead of using a centralized device such as a router, the connection is established directly between both devices just as it happens with the Bluetooth connections, improving the speed and security, avoiding dependence on a router and avoiding any type of problems, such as the security measures of the router itself.

Android supports this type of connections, although, unfortunately, does not implement it too well natively and forces us to resort to third party applications or ROMs of certain manufacturers that have implemented a file sharing tool to through this protocol.

The advantages and disadvantages of Wi-Fi Direct

As we have said, the two main advantages of sharing data via Wi-Fi Direct are speed, since Wi-Fi is much faster than Bluetooth, and security, since we are talking about a direct point-to-point connection in which no one can intervene (unlike if we are connected to a router).

In addition, this protocol can be used for more purposes, for example, to control other devices remotely, such as a Home Cinema, without having to resort to special protocols.

Anyway, Wi-Fi Direct is not perfect, and it has several drawbacks. The first of these is that, as we have said, this protocol is not included in the standard version of Android, so depending on the device we use, we may have to resort to third-party applications, to be able to share files with other people through this protocol.
