Third Party Start Menu Causes Problems in Windows 10 Creators Update

windows creators update

With the release of Windows 8 and the elimination of the classic Windows Start Menu, some developers started to develop excellent alternatives that allowed us to use this menu in the operating system, greatly improving its usability. With the advent of Windows 10 the Start Menu came back, although it had changed quite a bit from what it had been. However there were still so many users that continued to use these applications to have a classic start menu in the system, something that had not given problems until the arrival of Windows 10 Creators Update.

Windows 10 Creators Update is the new version of the operating system by Microsoft that little by little is getting more and more users. This new version has a large number of changes, both visual and external, that have made all or almost all users who have made the leap to this new operating system happy. However, as more users are testing this new system problems are gradually emerging such as those related to the above mentioned third-party Start Menu.

As Microsoft warns, these unofficial applications are responsible for a large number of failures and problems when upgrading the operating system as they overwrite system files for unofficial and incompatible versions of the system. This way, most users who have tried to upgrade to Windows 10 Creators Update and had one of these applications installed have been able to see how their system ended up with a black screen with the mouse in the middle and no possibility to load the desktop nor the file explorer.

The company has not published a list with applications of this style that are incompatible, although according to Microsoft they are all or at least most of them are incompatible.

You will not receive Windows 10 Creators Update if you use a third party Start menu

To prevent more users from being affected by this problem, Microsoft has taken the decision to block the update to all users who have installed an alternative boot menu on their system. These types of applications have been considered as incompatible applications and, therefore, Windows Update will no longer offer the possibility to upgrade to the new version when these tools are present in the system.

In case you want to install the new version of the operating system, users will have to remove these applications before starting the installation. This way, the installation process should be completed without any problems.

What to do if I get the black screen when upgrading to Windows 10 Creators Update?

If you have tried to update the system and have encountered this problem, all you have to do is restart your computer in Safe Mode and return to the previous version of Windows. This way the operating system will reboot without any problems and then you will simply have to uninstall the alternative boot menu so that you can re-update your Windows 10 without any further problems.

It is not useful to uninstall the boot menu from Safe Mode as it does not guarantee that the system will restart and operate normally.

Although at first it seems that once you installed the new version of Windows 10, you can install these applications again to be able to use the classic Windows 7 start menu in Windows 10 and work without problems, but it is not recommended to do so. As in the long run this incompatibility issue can cause many problems for the equipment.

The Windows Start Menu 10 along with Cortana, are among the most useful tools of operating system. It’s worth taking a few minutes to get hold of them before installing third-party incompatible software on your computer.
