WeDo is the platform LEGO built to allow schools to show students the possibilities of their programmable components.

In 2008 came the first version of WeDo intended to provide children with an experience not only technical learning, but also to learn to improve their creativity, teamwork and problem solving. What about the other LEGO kits those already were there? They were simply very expensive, both for families and for educational institutions.

That is why the firm decided to present a new model that was compatible with the parts and programming environments of the other packages. Right now LEGO WeDo is already obsolete, although we can still continue to acquire pieces in portals like eBay.

What contained the first LEGO WeDo:

This package includes the most basic (that’s why it was so cheap). However, it was enough for children to learn the basics and to learn the concept of programming, which is perhaps the most important thing when it comes to picking code.

What were the possibilities?

The most basic and at the same time what used to be most used as an example when testing the original LEGO WeDo was a crocodile that would close his mouth every time we put our fingers or anything else in it.

Both the mechanics, as the electronics, as the program used were very basic. It simply consisted of a sensor and an actuator, in this case a motor with a strap that opened and closed the mouth.

Programming Environment

The original LEGO WeDo did not even have an exclusive programming environment, but used Scratch. While it is true that the environments of the other models are based on this one which was originally developed by MIT Labs, the situation changes because in those cases the Danish had designed that software in specific.

LEGO WeDo 2.0

LEGO WeDo 2.0 is the natural evolution of the original WeDo. It is more modern, with many improvements, especially in the programming environment and with a price also very affordable. It was presented at the CES of 2016 (January).

There is not much change with the previous version. Obviously it is more modern, but the initial components are basically the same. Yes, the possibilities increase exponentially, since it has been 8 years since the previous review and have been able to clarify many things to be able to launch a much more mature product like WeDo 2.0.

What’s Included Kit

The pieces are the same although it is true that they are totally renovated and redesigned. The sensors are more accurate, yes, in addition to using modern technology. The novelty is, above all, that include more types of pieces and bricks to make more elaborate constructions.

Technical possibilities

The old crocodile is far behind; now the constructions are more complete, although they still maintain the simplicity, element necessary when dealing with children of seven years, that is the objective of this product.

In the video, for example, we see how they have developed a basket of basketball that bends at the whim of a servomotor programmed for this simple task. Thanks to the pack of LEGO blocks and figures, we can play as if we were the one throwing the ball, trying to get it even when the pole is in motion.

Software driver

LEGO WeDo 2.0 also uses Scratch, but a more current and adapted version for the occasion. It is executable in both mobile devices (as tablets) and of course compatible with a PC or a Mac computer or laptop. The idea remains the same: to be able to drag the blocks and join them to automate the tasks that the robot.

WeDo 2.0 price

Being low-cost, this version costs only about $160, although we can find it for much less, even for $110 if we rummage through the network. In some cases, however, we can also find it more expensive, on for $170 or $190.
