Holi Safety Precaution

You know Holi is coming when you see Gulaal and Color stalls decked across the city. Holidays is one of the popular and widely celebrated Hindu festivals, celebrated primarily in India. It’s celebrated every year on the last full moon day of the Falgun month, according to Hindu moon calendar. ( Usually in the month of march.) It is said in Hindu mythology that Holidays celebrates the death of Holika, Hrinyakashyapu’s sister, by his son Prahlaad. The festival also signifies the end of winter season and the beginning of spring.
Holi is one of the most colourful and fun-filled festivals of India, which makes it popular around the world. It has something for everyone, no matter what their age is. Well, now that Holi is so close, we’re sure you must be excited for the bhang and the gujiyas, the mischief and the drenching in colours, the dancing and the rallying across town with your friends, and so are we! But, one should remember that the aftereffects of the festival of colours can sometimes be unpleasant, leaving people with severe skin rashes, infections, eye allergies and even hair discoloration.

How Holi Colors became harmful over the years

Holi Colors

Back in the day, herbs and spring flowers were used to make traditional Holi colors; Moreover, these natural colours even had therapeutic characteristics. But you won’t find them easily these days, because modern Holi colors are mostly made up of chemicals and industrial dyes. Therefore some serious damage to skin, and discoloration, dermatitis, abrasion, irritation, itching, rashes, eczema and dryness are some of the common reactions reported by dermatologists post-Holi.

Tips for a safe Holi

Have a safe Holi this year byfollowing tips before you step out to play Holi.

safe Holi

1. On the Holi eve, ensure that you and everyone around you stays at a safe distance from the huge Holi bonfire.

2. Your skin is your largest and most delicate organ, and it’s your responsibility to keep it safe from harmful synthetic holi colours, which are usually made up of toxic chemicals and ingredients such as lead oxide in black colour, mercury sulfide in red, aluminium bromide in silver and copper sulfate in green. These chemicals are prone to penetrate your skin and cause rashes, allergies, blisters, infections, acne, etc. Therfore, it’s better to wear clothes which can cover as much of your body as possible. Also, you should especially avoid bright colors like sky blue, purple, yellow, light green, and orange, since these bright colors are very likely to be made up of toxic chemical ingredients.

3. As far as possible, try to make your own herbal colours at home using household ingredients like turmeric, marigold flowers or herbal colours; If it’s not possible, then make sure that you buy only herbal formulations. Try to stick to safe colors like light red or pink only, which are safer and easier to take off. Maintain a safe distance from bright purple, green, yellow and orange colours as these are more likely to be harmful to your skin.

4. Apply a good amount of moisturizing body lotion or skin oil on your face, arms, legs, as well as other exposed part of skin. You can also make use of waterproof sunscreens to protect your skin from sun damage.

5. Your hair can become brittle, frizzy and extremely dry because of Holi colours. Protect it from those harmful chemicals, dirt, and dust by massaging the scalp and hair with oil. Wear a cap If you can, before you head outdoors to play Holi.

6. Protect your eyes by wearing sunglasses and remove contact lenses before venturing outdoors. If colour enters the eyes immediately rinse them with cold water.

7. Don’t use any kind of harsh soaps or shampoo to wash off the colors. Instead, apply mild soap on your skin and baby shampoo in your hair, followed by a good conditioner. At No cost should you use kerosene, petrol and spirits to remove stains, as they will make your skin even drier.

8. Instantly wash off colour from any body part on which you observe irritation or itching. Quickly apply a Lactocalamine lotion or aloevera gel, and avoid sunlight for some time as it will cause more irritation.

9. Do not play outdoors/indoors with dry colours if you suffer from asthma or are allergic to any type of dust and pollen.

10. The official drink of Holi, bhang, when consumed in large quantities can increase your blood pressure tremendously and also speed up your heart rate. Be safe, and drink it in moderation and avoid mixing it with alcohol.

11. Respect our natural resources and avoid wasting too much water. Avoid throwing water balloons from a distance as they may injure someone.

12. Respect all forms of life and avoid putting colour on street animals and pets. It is extremely harmful to them and amounts to cruelty.

13. Replenish and rejuvenate your skin after the festivities with lots of moisturizer or a homemade face pack of gram flour (besan) and curd or cream (malai). An oil massage (coconut, olive or mustard oil), plenty of water and a good amount of rest should have you in good form sooner than later.

14. Avoid using your fingers to eat to avoid Holi colours from getting into your system through food. The changing weather conditions during this time of the year could make you more susceptible to colds and cough. Avoid drinks and food that are too cold. Go for lukewarm water instead.

15. Stay hydrated by drinking water before, after and during the festivities. Water keeps the harmful chemicals from being absorbed into the skin and also helps get rid of excess toxins.
