Facebook has started testing use of Aadhaar as an example to promote new users in India to use their real names on its site. The latest move is aimed at curbing the number of fake accounts on the social media platform that has over 241 million consumers from the country, making India the second biggest market for Facebook after the United States.

Facebook’s mobile site is analyzing the ‘name according to Aadhaar’ instant when user create a brand new account. “What is your name? Employing the name on your Aadhaar card makes it easier for friends to recognise you,” the prompt reads. The testing was initially seen by users Reddit and Twitter. Notably, not everyone can see this instant when creating a new account via the Facebook mobile website. We weren’t able to replicate the prompt.
A spokesperson confirmed to HiTechGazette , “We want to make sure people can use the names they are known by on Facebook, and can readily connect with family and friends. This is a small test where we supply additional language when people sign up for an account to state that using the name on their Aadhaar card makes it much easier for friends to recognise them. That is an optional prompt which we’re testing, people aren’t required to join the name in their Aadhaar card”
Only a small fraction of users that access Facebook on cellular are currently seeing the instant. As the spokesperson cites, it isn’t mandatory to use the name according to Aadhaar, just a prompt for users. Facebook, of course, needs you to use your actual name, and it is only one approach to encourage said use.

It’s worth noting here that Facebook is only asking the user under its pilot program to enroll on its own social network employing the titles which are available on their Aadhaar cards also does not ask any Aadhaar details. The move doesn’t increase further Aadhaar privacy issues, and risk of possible abuse does not increase. Normally, we don’t report on developments in an app or service’s onboarding process. But the effort of using Aadhaar – which is presently embroiled in its solitude controversies – as an illustration to enhance real name usage on Facebook makes it stand out.
