Moonlighter is an action RPG game that takes us back to the 8-bit days.
It’s got rogue-like elements, pixel graphics, and more than a few similarities to the classic Zelda games.
But there are plenty of other Moonlighter alternatives, so I need to talk about them!
So, up next, I’ll share some of my favorite games like Moonlighter!
Dead Cells
Dead Cells is a platforming roguelike action game that draws many comparisons to other games like moonlighter.
It features a 2D Metroidvania style of gameplay, where you explore dungeons and fight enemies to get new abilities that help you progress further and further through the levels. The combat system can be pretty challenging, but it’s also gratifying when you finally manage to kill an enemy for good.
Dead Cells’ art style is also very unique, with some pixel-art graphics that give it an old-school feel while still looking modern at the same time.
Darkest Dungeon
Darkest Dungeon is a game where you manage an estate and try to keep your heroes alive as they go on quests. The gameplay consists of choosing between various characters with different abilities, upgrading your estate with different buildings and items, and hiring mercenaries that can help you in battle.
Your goal is to explore dungeons while keeping enough money coming in so that you don’t run out of supplies or get kicked off the island.
Diablo 3
If you’re into the loot-based action RPG genre, then Diablo III is an excellent comparison to games like Moonlighter.
You play as a hero who enters dungeons and fights monsters to get weapons, armor, and other items.
Diablo game has many classes for you to choose from when creating your character. These classes are similar to those found in other games, such as Skyrim:
- Barbarian – Can use two-handed weapons or shields.
- Demon Hunter – Is an archer class that uses bows and crossbows.
- Monk – Has staff and can use magic powers.
- Wizard – Uses magic spells with their staff.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is an action role-playing game similar to Moonlighter.
In both games, you play as a shopkeeper who has been tasked with defeating monsters and collecting loot from dungeons. You can then use your newly acquired items to sell in your store!
Both games also feature an open world where you can explore freely.
Both games feature a variety of weapons and armor for you to equip onto your character as well as dungeons full of enemies to fight and bosses to defeat.
Titan Souls
Titan Souls is a2D action-adventure game where you play as an archer tasked with defeating giant bosses.
You can only attack with one arrow, but it’s powerful enough to kill most enemies in one hit.
One hit means death for the player character, so it’s essential to be careful and plan your attacks accordingly.
Crypt of the Necrodancer
Crypt of the Necrodancer is another excellent alternative for those who want to play as a merchant in an action RPG game.
The premise of Crypt of the Necrodancer is simple: you are exploring a dungeon and collecting gold, weapons, and items that will help you on your journey. You also have to fight monsters along the way to get loot and other treasures that can be sold in town.
Crypt of the Necrodancer uses a unique control scheme that uses a dance pad controller instead of buttons or analog sticks, as most console games do nowadays.
Instead, players will have to press different directional buttons on their dance pads based on what’s displayed on-screen when an enemy attacks them. They can avoid damaging enemies’ attacks by dodging them quickly enough before getting hit by one!
This adds an extra layer of difficulty since it requires more skill than pressing buttons repeatedly, as in other games like moonlighter.
Rogue Legacy
A 2D platformer with rogue-like elements, Rogue Legacy, features an open world and procedurally generated levels that you must traverse to reach the end of each stage. As you progress through the game, you will be able to collect new weapons and armor, which can be used in combat or traded for gold.
This game has been compared to Moonlighter because both feature similar gameplay mechanics. Both games feature an open world with procedurally generated levels, allowing players to explore different areas as they progress through the story.
Both games also feature roguelike elements: meaning that death is permanent for your character’s life but not their stats (which will carry over when you restart).
Grim Dawn
Grim Dawn is a Diablo 2-inspired ARPG developed by Crate Entertainment and published by Crate Entertainment.
It was released on PC in February 2016 and is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux. The game follows a dark fantasy theme where players take control of one character that must travel the world fighting monsters to save humanity from utter destruction.
Grim Dawn has many features similar to other action RPG games like Moonlighter but also differs in some ways. For example, Grim Dawn uses an open world map where you can freely explore it at your own pace after completing main or side quests.
Void Bastards
Void Bastards is a space adventure game where you play as a pilot who has been stranded on an alien planet. Your task is to survive for as long as possible and find a way back to Earth.
The gameplay consists of exploring the planet, building your base, crafting weapons and armor, fighting enemies, and completing quests.
You can pause the game at any time by pressing the ESC key on your keyboard or controller; this will bring up a menu that will allow you quick access to crafting items or quitting the game entirely if needed.
A Robot Named Fight!
A Robot Named Fight! is another game in the same genre as Moonlighter. It’s a rogue-lite platformer RPG set in a pixelated world.
Your goal?
Get as much loot as possible and make it to the next level without dying. You can also upgrade your robot by collecting coins, finding items, and defeating enemies!
The gameplay might remind you of Moonlighter because both games are similar in style and gameplay mechanics – but this one doesn’t require too much thinking or strategizing.
So if you’re looking for an arcade-like experience where all it takes is pure reflexes and some good timing, then A Robot Named Fight! may be right up your alley!
Hollow Knight
The world of Hollow Knight is a vast, interconnected place that you can explore in any direction you want. It’s a Metroidvania-style game emphasizing platforming and exploration, but it also has the combat depth of an action RPG.
In addition to its open-ended structure and emphasis on player choice, the game offers several different characters to play as—each with their abilities and play styles—as well as multiple endings depending on how you choose to proceed through the story.
Hollow Knight is available on PC/Mac/Windows 10, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
Conclusion
